Beating the Water Temple in Ocarina of Time
The Water Temple in “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” is renowned for its complexity and the level of challenge it presents. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you conquer this aquatic maze.
Gather Necessary Items
Before entering the Water Temple, make sure you have the following:
- Iron Boots: Acquired from the Ice Cavern.
- Hookshot: Upgraded to Longshot after defeating Dark Link in the Water Temple.
- Fairy Ocarina or Ocarina of Time: Required to play songs.
- Zora Tunic: Allows you to breathe underwater.
- Arrows, Bombs, and Magic Meter: For combat and puzzle solving.
- Fairy Bow: For activating distant crystal switches.
Entering the Water Temple
Equip the Zora Tunic and Iron Boots and dive into Lake Hylia to find the entrance to the Water Temple. Use the Hookshot to open the gate.
Managing Water Levels
Controlling the water level is crucial in the Water Temple. You will find three Triforce symbols in different locations that lower and raise water levels when you play Zelda’s Lullaby.
Begin with the First Water Level
- Upon entering, immediately go to the room on the bottom floor to find a Triforce symbol. Play Zelda’s Lullaby to lower the water.

Second Water Level

- Use the small keys to open the door leading to Dark Link. This mini-boss is easier to beat with the Megaton Hammer or Din’s Fire.

Boss Key and Morpha
- Use the Longshot to reach new areas and obtain the Boss Key.
- Find the room where you fight the temple boss, Morpha. Use the Longshot to pull out its nucleus and attack it with your sword.
Completing the Water Temple
After defeating Morpha, grab the Heart Container and approach the blue portal to complete the Water Temple and receive the Water Medallion.
