Pairing One iPhone to Another iPhone for File Transfers Using AirDrop
Transferring files from one iPhone to another is made easy by Apple’s AirDrop technology. AirDrop allows you to share photos, videos, contacts, and other types of data wirelessly between nearby Apple devices without the need for an internet connection. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use AirDrop to pair your iPhones for file transfers.
Step 1: Enable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
Ensure that both the sending and receiving iPhones have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on. AirDrop relies on both of these services to work:
- Open the ‘Settings’ app on both iPhones.
- Tap ‘Wi-Fi’ and make sure it is turned on.
- Go back to ‘Settings’ and tap ‘Bluetooth’, then turn it on as well.
Step 2: Enable AirDrop on Both iPhones
You need to enable AirDrop on both iPhones to make them discoverable to each other:
- Open the Control Center by swiping down from the top-right corner of the screen (on iPhones with Face ID) or swiping up from the bottom of the screen (on iPhones with a Home button).
- Press and hold on the network settings card in the top-left to expand it.
- Tap on ‘AirDrop’ and select ‘Everyone’ or ‘Contacts Only’. If you choose ‘Everyone’, any nearby Apple device with AirDrop enabled can see your device. If you select ‘Contacts Only’, only your contacts can see your device.
Step 3: Prepare the Files for Transfer
On the iPhone from which you want to send files:
- Locate the file you want to send. For example, go to the Photos app for pictures and videos.
- Select the file or files you want to transfer.
- Tap the share button (the square with an arrow pointing upward).
Step 4: Initiate the AirDrop Transfer
After tapping the share button, you’ll see the AirDrop section in the share sheet:
- Under the AirDrop section, wait for the receiving iPhone to appear. It might take a few seconds for it to show up. Make sure the iPhones are near each other.
- Once the receiver’s iPhone appears, tap on their device name. This will send a prompt to the receiving iPhone.
Step 5: Accept the Incoming File on the Receiving iPhone
On the receiving iPhone:
- A prompt will appear asking if you’d like to accept the file being sent. You can choose to ‘Accept’ or ‘Decline’ the transfer.
- If you accept, the file will be transferred and will open automatically if it’s a photo or a video. For other file types, it may be saved automatically to the appropriate app or you may be prompted to choose an app to open it with.
Tips for Successful AirDrop Use
- If you’re sending sensitive data, it’s safer to use ‘Contacts Only’ to prevent other nearby devices from seeing your device.
- If the receiving iPhone does not show up, ensure that both devices are not in ‘Do Not Disturb’ mode as this can make the device undiscoverable via AirDrop.
- Both iPhones should be within 30 feet (9 meters) of each other to ensure a successful transfer.
- If you are still unable to see the other iPhone, try to restart Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on both devices, and try again.
If you follow these steps, you should be able to seamlessly pair one iPhone to another iPhone and transfer files between them using AirDrop.
