Getting Creases Out of Plastic
Plastic is a versatile material, but it can be prone to creasing if it’s bent or stored incorrectly. Getting these creases out can be a challenge because plastic has a tendency to retain the shape it’s been forced into. However, with a few methods, you can restore your plastic items to a smoother state.
Method 1: Using Heat
Applying heat is one of the most common ways to remove creases from plastic. Follow these steps carefully because too much heat can warp or melt the plastic.
Step 1: Heat the Plastic
Use a hairdryer on a low or medium setting to gently heat the creased area. Keep the hairdryer a safe distance—about 8 to 12 inches—from the plastic to avoid melting it. Move the hairdryer back and forth over the crease for several minutes.
Step 2: Smooth out the Crease
After heating the plastic for a few minutes, use your hands to carefully smooth out the crease. For thin plastics, you can also place a heavy, flat object on top after heating to help press out the crease.
Step 3: Let the Plastic Cool
Allow the plastic to cool down completely. If you have used a heavy object to help smooth it out, leave it in place until the plastic is cold.
Caution:
Overheating can cause irreversible damage, so use the heat method cautiously and always start with the lowest heat setting.
Method 2: Soaking in Hot Water
If heating with a hairdryer doesn’t work or you’re dealing with a thicker piece of plastic, soaking in hot water might be a better option.
Step 1: Prepare a Hot Water Bath
Fill a basin or sink with hot water. The water should be hot enough to affect the plastic but not so hot that it can cause burns or warp the plastic.
Step 2: Submerge the Plastic
Place the creased plastic item in the hot water, making sure it’s completely submerged. Let it soak for several minutes.
Step 3: Remove and Smooth Out
Carefully remove the plastic from the water and gently smooth out the crease by hand or with a flat tool, like a spatula. Use caution as the plastic and water will be hot.
Step 4: Cool Down
Allow the plastic to cool gradually on a flat surface. If the crease is still noticeable, you may repeat the process or consider using a heavier object to press down on the plastic during the cooling process.
Method 3: Using Cold Treatment
In some cases, cold can make plastic more pliable and easier to reshape. This method generally works best for thin plastic films or bags.
Step 1: Chill the Plastic
Place the creased plastic item in the refrigerator or freezer for about 15-30 minutes.
Step 2: Remove and Smooth Out
Once chilled, take out the plastic and quickly smooth out the crease with your hands or a flat object. The cold can make the plastic less flexible, so work quickly.
Step 3: Allow to Return to Room Temperature
After you’ve worked out the crease, let the plastic return to room temperature naturally.
Additional Tips:
- For items that cannot be submerged or exposed to heat, like electronic devices, try gently massaging the crease with your fingers.
- If possible, consult the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific type of plastic you’re dealing with, as some may have unique properties or care requirements.
- Prevention is key with plastic; try to store items flat or rolled rather than folded to avoid creasing in the future.
Before trying any method, consider the value and replaceability of the plastic item in question. If it’s irreplaceable or could be easily damaged, consider consulting a professional restorer.
