Step 6: Continue the Lapping Process
Repeat the process of lapping and checking until you are satisfied with the smoothness and finish of the bore. Depending on the barrel’s condition, this could take several hours of careful work.
Step 7: Clean the Barrel Thoroughly
Once the lapping is complete, it’s critical to remove all traces of the abrasive compound. Clean the barrel thoroughly with solvent, running multiple patches through until they come out clean.
After Lapping
After the barrel has been lapped and cleaned, perform a final inspection to ensure that the quality of the finish meets your expectations. A borescope can be very helpful for this step, as it provides a detailed view of the bore’s interior surfaces. Some shooters also prefer to shoot a few fouling shots and then clean the barrel again to remove any residual abrasives that may be embedded in the pores of the metal.
Considerations and Tips
While hand lapping can be beneficial, it also removes metal from the barrel which can reduce its lifespan if done excessively. Ensure you work slowly and do not over-lap the barrel. It’s also important to be aware that not all barrels need lapping; many high-end barrels come pre-lapped from the factory.
